about

Paranoid King is about those in power seeking to undermine independent thinking, transfer blame, and distraction tactics as a means to preserve their usually inept leadership.

Specifically this song looks at the story of Agnes (Aggie) Sampson, a Scottish healer and accused witch during the North Berwick Witch trials. (*more info below, if you fancy a wee read)

This song is use wearing our Black Sabbath influence on our sleeve.

*Aggie (also known as the Wise Wife of Keith) was a midwife and was accused under the rule of King James VI. James VI had a dark fascination with Witch trials and was personally involved in her trial.

The accusations stated Aggie was found dancing with the devil in the church and was handed a painting of James VI with the intent to kill him.

She confessed to this crime after torture and was reported to have "the devil's mark" on her when stripped, most likely a birth mark.

In 1591 she was burned at the stake at Edinburgh Castle.

Lyrics - I met the devil in your church, but don't hurt me and don't kill aggie

They tortured a doctor I think to get him to turn on her too so wrote that part from his point of view. it's take on religious history as it states the devil is in the church itself but is also a reference to the accusations

Rise of the kirk, a diabolic pact, you cast your curse, and the devil's mark - that's the bridge again relates to the "devil's mark" they found

Flesh is scarred Smoke is rising kill your coven for a paranoid King, references to the burning.
